Crushed Rock — Fine Grading

Define the finished purpose, reference levels, underlying material condition and the evidence required by the receiving operation. Geometry alone does not establish structural or agronomic performance.

This reference assembles relevant extracts from the guide library. It is general project planning, not a local project report, verified specification or translated technical publication.

Crushed-Rock Preparation

Crushed-rock preparation concerns a specified material layer. Its grading, moisture and compaction requirements belong to the project brief, not merely the machine placing it.

Before moving material

Confirm material documents and supporting-layer acceptance.

Receiving operation and checks

Complete the specified testing and surface acceptance. Check material uniformity and layer depth.

A scraper's capacity cannot establish the compacted thickness achieved.

From Rough Grade to Fine Grade

Rough grading establishes the broad shape; fine grading corrects the remaining smaller deviations. Trying to finish while bulk quantities are still wrong can waste passes and disturb completed areas. The changeover should occur when levels are close enough, materials are suitable and the receiving surface is ready for controlled trimming.

Before moving material

Complete major excavation and isolate unsuitable ground.

Receiving operation and checks

Protect the finished area from uncontrolled traffic and schedule the next layer. Check local levels and continuity through joins, not only the average elevation.

Fine grading cannot rescue a weak formation hidden beneath a neat finish.

Fine Grading

Fine grading removes smaller departures from the intended surface after the main quantities are close. Light controlled passes are more useful than repeatedly loading heavily through nearly finished ground.

Before moving material

Confirm that underlying formation and material are accepted.

Receiving operation and checks

Protect the corrected surface and schedule the next operation promptly. Inspect local depressions, edge ties and smooth changes in slope.

Fine grading is a geometric operation; it does not certify density or bearing capacity.

Record the job inputs

Use this checklist to turn the scenario into a specific brief. Retain the design revision and agree who accepts each completed layer.

Checklist ticks apply only while this page is open. Include the completed brief in your project records.
